Ambitious App Onboarding Design
Overview
Ambitious offers a personalized way for Gen-Z to learn digital skills, tackling challenges like time and consistency. With AI-driven daily lessons, project-based practice, and a story-style experience, users can stay on track and apply their skills. Skill-based workshops provide deeper insights, helping users build confidence and expertise in a way that fits into their busy lives.
Problem
The app's design fell short of portraying a premium learning platform and failed to resonate with the young, tech-savvy Gen-Z audience. Additionally, the personalized loading page, which appears after users complete the onboarding flow, does not effectively communicate the value of the app's AI-driven customization. It missed the opportunity to emphasize that the platform uses their input to create a truly tailored learning experience, making the personalization feel less impactful and memorable.
Solution
After surveying users through Google and Facebook groups, we discovered that most people want a personalized learning pathway to boost their careers, love the idea of a story-style experience, and are open to paying for it. To address this, I designed a multi-step onboarding flow to identify each user’s needs, followed by a dynamic loading screen showcasing the personalized experience being created for them. This leads to a customized pathway that demonstrates our commitment to their goals, making the paywall feel valuable and worth investing in.
The final crumbs
We debated whether to place a paywall immediately after users view their personalized pathway. A paywall could deter potential users who want to try the app or access freemium content first. To address this, we decided that after users see their AI-generated pathway, they would be presented with an option to subscribe to a premium plan that unlocks the entire pathway, allowing them to explore the full experience before committing.
Key takeaways
Balancing Accessibility and Conversion in Design. Balancing user experience with business goals is essential. Offering value upfront while guiding users toward conversion leads to a more accessible and successful design.
